Two-element compounds are usually ionic when one element is a metal and the other is a non-metal. Examples include: sodium chloride: NaCl, with Na+ and Cl- ions. lithium nitride: Li3N, with Li+ and N3- ions.

Ionic compounds are the compounds which consist of ions.
When one of the element is metal and the other is non-metal then the mixture of compounds is usually ionic.
Ionic compounds are electrically neutral compounds as the elements contain charges which are opposite and equal in nature.
The two examples are Sodium chloride and Lithium Nitride.
