Ions are the charged particle. You can say that ions are the charged atoms.

They have either positive, (+) or negative ( - ) charge on them.

We know that the atom as a whole are neutral, that is, they have number of protons = number of electrons.
If the electron is removed from the atom, then the number of electrons become less than the number of protons. Hence, the neutral atom becomes charged as the proton becomes greater in number than electron. Hence, it acquires a positive charge. These positive ions are called as cations.

Example :- Na+

Now if electron is provided or acquired by the atom, than it becomes negatively charged as the number of electrons become greater than the number of protons. Since negative charge is greater in the atom, it becomes a negatively charged ion. These negatively charged ions are called as anion

Example :- Cl-

hey there !

everything in the world wants to become stable and that is too with atom they too wants to become stable by sharing or gaining electrons

what are ions?

ions are charged particles

an atom of an element always needs 8 electrons in its outer cell to complete its octect

points to be remembered

• when an atom has 1 , 2,3 electrons in its outer cell it looses electrons and hence it becomes positively charged

as it looses electrons , so its obvious the no of protons will increase

example - sodium , atomic no 11

doing electronic configuration of sodium

11 = 2,8,1 ( it has 1 electron in its outermost cell so it will loose 1 electron and will become positively charged) hence sodium will become cation (positively charged)

• when an atom has 5,6,7 electrons in its outermost cell it will gain electrons and as its gaining electrons so it will become negatively charged

example - chlorine, atomic no -17

doing electronic configuration

17= 2,8,7

it needs one more electron in its outermost cell to complete its octect that to become 8

so here it will gain 1 electron and will become negatively charged ion that is anion
