Metamorphic rocks by definition are rocks which have been changed, which means they were once some other type of rock, possibly igneous, sedimentary or even metamorphic rocks themselves. These changes (metamorphism) are usually as a result of one or more of the following factors: Increased temperature and pressure conditions (which is consistent with depth increase, hence metamorphism is a phenomenon that occurs hypothetically* at depth), crustal movements, actions of fluids from igneous materials and so on. As a result, crystalline structure and texture of the old rock is completely changed, with new minerals forming in the process.
