Explanation:

Metalloids are the elements which are having a combination of some properties of metals along with some properties of non- metals.Their properties are intermediate between the properties of metals and non-metals.

Example: Boron, silicon, germanium etc.

Question:-

What are metalloids?

Answer:-

A metalloid is a type of chemical element which has a preponderance of properties in between, or that are a mixture of, those of metals and nonmetals. There is no standard definition of a metalloid and no complete agreement on which elements are metalloids.

Explanation:-

Uses of Metalloids:-

Boron (B)

  • Boron is used in fireworks as it has the quality of changing colour into green when it is burnt. It is one of the most explosive metalloids.

  • It is used in the form of boric acid and can be used a cleaning agent.

  • Boron when used in small amounts can act as a semi-natural pest controlling agent.

Silicon (Si)

  • Silicon finds application in the computer chips as it is a semiconductor.

  • Silicon in the form of silicones can be used as a waterproof sealant on roofs, around the water pipes.

Germanium (Ge)

  • Germanium is used in semiconductor industries to improve the conductive properties.

  • Fluorescent lamps and infrared detectors use germanium.

Arsenic (As)

  • When arsenic is mixed with gallium, it can be used as a semiconductor and finds application in LEDs.

  • It is so toxic that, arsenic can be used as an insecticide and in the preservation of wood.

  • Lead alloys that are used in manufacturing of bullets used arsenic.

Antimony (Sb)

  • Antimony is used as one of the ingredients in paints and ceramic enamels.

  • In ancient times, Egyptians used antimony as a cosmetic.

Tellurium (Te)

  • It is used an additive in the creation of alloys.

  • It is used in making of cast iron and ceramics to prevent thermal shocks.

Polonium (Po)

  • There is no much use of Polonium as it is the rarest element and is highly radioactive and toxic in nature.
