monatomic gas is defined as a gas composed of single atoms. Ex - He gas or Ne gas where all the atoms are single or monoatomic. Diatomic on the other hand has two atoms per molecule. Ex- H2 or N2 etc. Internal energy of monatomic gas is = (3/2)RT and for a diatomic gas is (5/2)RT.
