● Plastids are defined as small organelles present in the cytoplasm of the plant cell.
● They are of three types :
▪ Leucoplasts - These kind of plastids are used for the storage of starch in plant cells. They have no pigment and are therefore white in colour.
▪ Chromoplasts - These kind of plastids are used to permit color to the petals of flowers , etc. They contain pigmants called carotene and xanthophyll.
▪ Chloroplasts - These kind of plastids are used in the process of photosynthesis as they have green coloured pigment.

Plastids are found in all plant cells and in euglenoides. These are easily observed under the microscope as they are large. They bear some specific pigments, thus imparting specific colours to the plants..Based on the type of pigments plastids can be classified into chloroplasts, chromoplasts and leucoplasts.
-Chloroplasts are responsible for trapping light energy essential for photosynthesis.
-Leucoplast stores starch.
-Chromoplasts are plastid other than a chloroplast, typically containing a yellow or orange pigment.
