Relative clause is a kind of dependent or subordinate clause that gives more information about a noun or subject in the same sentence. There are two types of relative clauses. First type is Defining Relative Clause and the other type is Non-Defining Relative Clause.

Defining relative clause functions or identifies which person or thing you are talking about. If left out, the sentence would appear incomplete. However, Non-defining relative clause only describes and adds extra information about somebody or something.  If left out, the sentence would still make sense. A non-defining relative clause is usually put in commas.

The given two sentences can be joined into a relative clause in the following manner:

The costly pen that she had lost was found by her friend.

The costly pen which she had lost was found by her friend.

Relative clause is actually about the dependent clause which tells about the noun or may subject that are within the same sentence.  Defining relative clause and non defining relative clauses are the two different types of relative clause . These clause normally used  for defining or identifying of the noun These usually starts with the pronounce like the “which “ or “that” etc which are actually the relative pronouns

So the sentences gives in the question can be linked together using the relative clause like “ The costly pen that he had lost was found by her friend”.
