Igneous rocks
The word IGNEOUS is derived from latin word IGNIS meaning 'fire'. Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling and solidification of molten magma from beneath the earth's crust.
example:Granite,pumice
Sedimentary rocks
The agents of nature like rain, ice, wind, plants and animals break rocks into fragments. These fragments are then carried away by running water, moving ice or wind and are deposited in layers in depressions usually under water. Over the years, these deposited materials or sediments that are accumulated in layers get compressed and hardened forming sedimentary rocks.
example:Shale,limestone
Metamorphic rocks
Metamorphic rocks are formed when the original character and appearance of igneous and sedimentary rocks are completely changed due to excessive heat and pressure.
example:Gneiss,marble
