(i) Ancient cities could develop only when an increase in food supplies made it possible to support a wide range of non-food producers.

(ii) Cities were often the centres of political power,

administrative networks, trade and industry, religious institutions and intellectual activity, and supported various social groups like artisans, merchants and priests etc. _

(iii) In comparison to cities, villages and towns had restricted activities. City can be densely settled modern-day metropolises which provide political and economic functions for an entire region. Or cities can be small city.
