Advantages: mesh networking and redundant data storage makes the overall system very fault tolerant and hard to bring down.

Swarms are also highly scalable and self organising, so they can execute commands like a multi core processor.

Disadvantages: mesh networking is much harder to make it work, the overall overhead of every node having a full copy of the AI program makes it very expensive.

Latency between nodes makes quickly useless to propagate a calculation more than two or three nodes in chain, and a single well capable robot is way more useful than a thousand of cheap bug like robots.

Swarms make sense when you have large areas to explore and monitor, expect the environment to be harsh and lose some drones due to accidents, don't expect robots to last more than one mission and you expect high demand.

A single well built robot makes much more sense for human driven exploration, survive predictable environment hardness and carrying payloads.
