1. Mechanical or barrier method:-

(a) Condoms:- these are widely used contraceptive in india because they are easily available, low cost, effective, and with no side effects.

(b) Diaphragm or cervical caps:-

These are reusable.

(c) Intrauterine devices:-

These include copper-T and loops which are fitted in the utreus and prevent fertilisation.

2. Chemical method:-

(a) spermicidal tablets, jellies, paste and creams are introduced in the vagina before coital activity.

(b) oral devices:-

These contain a combination of synthetic progestins and estrogens.

commonly used hormonal pills in india are: Mala-D and Saheli.

3.Natural methods:-

(a) Rythum period:- A weak before and a weak after the menstrual cycle are supposed to be safe periods for sexual intercourse.

(b) Lactational amenorrhea:- it has no side effects but it is effective only upto a maximum period of six months after parturition.

4. Surgical methods:-

(a) Male sterilization:- it is permanent method of birth control in which cutting of the vas deferens, called Vasectomy.

(b) Female sterilization:- it is permanent method of birth control in which cutting of fallopian tubes called Tubectomy.
