Eutrophication is the process of nutrient enrichment of aquatic ecosystems and the subsequent overgrowth of the plants on the surface of water .

Eutrophication happens when waste water released from fertilizer factories and runoffs from agricultural fields bring unwanted nutrients into water bodies.

This results in the rapid growth of algae and an increased demand for oxygen . Algae soon cover the entire surface of water and prevent sunlight from entering the water body, thus affecting other plants and aquatic animals.

When chemicals such as fertilizers

and pesticides are mixed up with water and flow down into rivers and canals pose serious damages to aquatic animals. This nutrient rich water promotes the growth of weeds resulting in eutrophication.
