An epidermis is a single-layered group of cells which are used for covering the plant leaves, roots, stem, and flowers. The epidermis is permeable in nature, it is used as a protection against water loss and gas exchange and also helps in absorbing mineral and water.

The cork, on the other hand, is a waterproof protective layer which can be found on the cork trees and consists of dead cells and this is impermeable in nature.

The epidermis is thin or the outer layer of the skin which is visible and provides protection to the body, this outer layer provides access to the nutrients and disposing of the waste and thickness of epidermis depends on the protection required by a specific area.

The cork cells are used to replace the epidermis and the outer layer but they are used in plants unlike epidermis, these cells are packed together, there are pores in cork cells which enable the plants to breathe and also provide protection to the plants.
