Answer:

Storm surge is a very complex phenomenon because it is sensitive to the slightest changes in storm intensity, forward speed, size (radius of maximum winds-RMW), angle of approach to the coast, central pressure (minimal contribution in comparison to the wind), and the shape and characteristics of coastal features such ...

Factors Influencing Storm surge :-

  • The slightest change in intensity, forward speed, angle, and the pressure of the storm can influence storm surges.

  • Shape and features like bays, estuaries influence the magnitude of the impact of storm surges.

  • A shallow continental slope can cause greater storm surge than a steeper continental shelf.

  • Coriolis force due to earth rotation can bend the current into right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. When these currents are contacted perpendicularly to the shore, it can amplify storm surges.

Impact of Storm surges :-

  • Drowning in the low lying areas in the coastal region.

  • Loss of lives.

  • Destruction of vegetation.

  • Salt content in seawater reduces the soil fertility.

  • Destruction of coastal Infrastructure (communication lines, Weather installations etc) and private properties.

  • Pollution of drinking water causing water scarcity.

  • It can cause an outbreak of Epidemics especially water-borne diseases.
