historical sites?

I usually listen to the tour-guide introducing the sights and take notes about important historical events.
Answer:
Explanation:
1) Surf internet as much as possible. You get interesting information many times.
2) If the place is being taken care by ASI, please try to collect their book or similar things about the place. This you can collect on the spot from their counter. Otherwise, if you know you'll be visiting such place in future and now you are at any other ASI counter, ask book on your interest place. Mostly all the counters have all the books.
3) A not so common, but very useful resource is historical novel. Try to read them frequently. So when you visit a place you have read of in form of a novel, you'll be able to connect to it better. I experienced in particularly while visiting Hampi, recalling the novel “tungabhadra r tir e”. And again I strangely corelated Humayun's tomb with novel “shahzada dara shuko”. It's said that Dara is buried in Humayun's tomb in an unmarked grave.
4) No history is complete without its geography and surrounding. I'm remembering here 2 such things. First, a kashmiri blessing “urzu durkut” which means “good health and strong knees”. You see, given kashmir's mountain terrain, blessing for strong knees is how practical. The second one I recall from my visit to pratapgarh fort in Maharashtra. The guide who came with us was proudly identifying himself as the descendant of Shivaji Maharaj. The guide lives in history. These things matter in historical place tours.
5) check whether Camera’s are allowed or not. In case, No, do they have locker facility or not.
