What are the four layers of the Gastrointestinal Tract and the function of each?

1. The mucosa is the innermost layer, and functions in absorption and secretion.

2. The submucosa is a, irregular layer of connective tissue with large blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerves that supports the mucosa.

3. The muscularis is responsible for the segmental contractions and peristaltic movements in the gastrointestinal  tract.

4. Serosa consists of a thin connective tissue layer that reduce the friction from muscle movements.
