-Lignite;Is brownish black,has a high moisturecontent(up to 45% & a high sulphur content.
-Sub-bituminous;decaying plants in swamps produce peat.
-Bituminous;is soft,dense,black coal.Has binds of bright & dull material in it.
-Anthracite;often referred to us hard coal as it is hard,black & lustrous.Is low in sulphur & high in carbon.It is the highest rank of coal.
