In between the skull and brain are three layers of tissue, called meninges. They protect the brain. The strong, outermost layer is named the dura mater. The pia mater is the innermost layer, with blood vessels that run deep into the brain

These are called the Meninges, and from the outside-in are the Dura mater, the Arachnoid mater, and the Pia mater. They are often called simply (but informally) the Dura, the Arachnoid, and the Pia.

They not only envelop and protect the brain, but the whole Central nervous system—that is: the brain and spinal chord.
