The three salient features of the Indian Constitution are-
1. Lengthiest constitution of the world- The Indian constitution has 444 Articles in 22 parts, 12 Schedules and 118 amendments that make it the lengthiest constitution of the World.
2. A unique blend of flexibility and rigidity- based on its amending procedures.
A law can be amended by three/ways-
a. Simple majority- that means that the law must be passed by 50% of member siting.
b. Special Majority- which is a 2/3rd majority of members of each house present and voting i.e. more than 50 percent of the total membership of each House.
c. Special Majority with ratification by half of the total states.
This ensures that the constitution is amended by the widest possible majority.
3. Federation with strong Unitary features- the powers are divided amongst the state and the Union. Due regards are given to the functions of the federal with a strong center. EXAMPLE- Common All Indian services, Emergency Provisions, etc.
