Major Components of Biogas are:

  • Methane (55 - 65%)
  • Carbon dioxide (30 - 40%)
  • Hydrogen Sulphide
  • Water vapour

Production of Biogas:

  • Hydrolysis: The organic matter (plant and animal waste) hydrolysed enzyme matically bye the enzymes released by the microorganisms into smaller, simpler molecules.

  • Fermentation: Acid producing, anaerobic microorganisms break down the intermediate components into father simple compounds and produces volatile acids, alcohol, amino acids and carbon dioxide.

  • Methane formation: Methanobacteria (methane producing bacteria) decompose the compounds in the earliest stages to produce methane ( the main component in biogas)

Advantages of biogas:

  • Biogas renewable source of energy, that can be produced locally and supplied to the nearby houses for domestic needs.

  • Very less emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide.

  • Efficient way to recycle organic waste from households and industries.
