Major sources of irrigation in India:

  • Irrigation is process by which agricultural lands are supplied with water.
  • Irrigation is of different types and different sources of freshwater can be used to irrigate the lands.
  • Primary sources include nearby water bodies like ponds, lakes, rivers, etc, which are very cheap, but not reliable in terms of water supply all through year.
  • The secondary processes include artificial irrigation which includes supply of water all through the year through artificial canals from water reservoirs and dams.
