In 1956, sinhala was recognised as the only official language of sri lanka; thus disregardin tamil.the govt. followed preferential policies that favoured sinhal applicants for university positions and govt. jobs. a new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster buddhism . a feeling of alienation was seen among sri lankan tamils.the sri lankan tamils launched parties and struggles for the recognition of tamil as official language and it was denied by the sinhala dominated government . these kinds of diffrences lead sri lanka in state of civil war.

hope it helps you!!
