Acids

Acid is a substance that produces H+ ions on dissolving in water because of getting ionised.

Properties of Acids

• Acids are sour in taste.

• Acids turn blue litmus red.

• Acids are electrolytes i.e., goid conductors of electricity.

• Acids react with metals to produce salt and hydrogen gas.

[Example : Zn (s) + H₂SO₄ (acid) ⇒ ZnSO₄ (ppt.) + H₂ (g)]

• Acid reacts with Carbonates to form salt, carbon dioxide and water.

[Example : CaCO₃ (carbonate) + 2HCl ⇒ CaCl₂ (ppt.) + CO₂ + H₂O]

• Acid reacts with base to form salt and water.

[Example : NaOH (base) + HCl (acid) ⇒ NaCl (ppt.) + H₂O]

• Acid reacts with oxides to form salt and water.

[Example : CaO (oxide) + 2HCl ⇒ CaCl₂ (ppt.) + H₂O]

• Acid are highly corrosive and hence can damage skin, ckoths and even tough solids
