Homozygous means that both copies of a gene or locus match whileheterozygous means that the copies do not match. Two dominant alleles (AA) or two recessive alleles (aa) arehomozygous. One dominant allele and one recessive allele (Aa) isheterozygous.

Reasons for Mendel's:

Sir Gregor Johann Mendel, the Father of genetics is well known for his experiments on the sweet pea plants to sort out the genetics. His experiments were completely successful but remain unrecognized because of the contemporary knowledge, the orthodox mentality of the people and blind belief on religion.

The reasons for his success were:

  • He kept right numerical records of the number of plants with desired characters.
  • He brought into account only one or two characters at a time.
  • The genes, he called as factors, he chose were present on different chromosomes, or widely separated, so there wasn’t any chance of linkage.
