When an earthquake arises shockwaves of energy, known as seismic waves, are discharged from the earthquake focus. They shake the Earth and temporarily swerve soft deposits like clay, into jelly known as liquefaction.

There are two basic types of seismic waves Body waves and Surface waves. P-waves and S-waves are sometimes wholly known as body waves.

Body waves travel through the inner of the Earth, body waves arrive before the surface waves spewed by an earthquake. These waves possess a higher frequency than surface waves.

  1. The first type of body wave is the P-wave or primary wave which is the fastest sort of seismic wave and the first to arrive at a seismic station.
  2. The second kind of body wave is the S-wave or secondary wave, and they are the second wave to arrive after an earthquake.

Surface waves are comparable in nature to water waves and travel just under the surface of the Earth. They are generally produced when the source of the earthquake is near the surface of the Earth.
