Two kinds of nitrogen-fixing bacteria are recognized. The first kind, the free-living (nonsymbiotic) bacteria, includes the cyanobacteria (or blue-green algae) Anabaena and Nostoc and genera such as Azotobacter, Beijerinckia, and Clostridium.

The two types of nitrogen fixation are: (1) Physical Nitrogen Fixation and (2) Biological Nitrogen Fixation.
1>Under the influence of lightning (i.e., electric discharge in the clouds) and thunder, N2 and O2 of the air react to form nitric oxide (NO). The nitric oxides are again oxidized with oxygen to form nitrogen peroxide (NO2).
2>The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into the nitrogenous compounds through the agency of living organisms is called biological nitrogen fixation. The process is carried out by two main types of microorganism: those which live in close symbiotic association with other plants and those which are “free living” or non-symbiotic.
