Various methods used for propagating plants artificially:

  • Artificial plant propagation is a very significant process of horticulture. The methods most commonly used in artificial plant propagation are cutting, layering, grafting and tissue culture.
  • Cutting is a method in which any of the plant part like leaves, roots or stem are cut off from the parent plant and planted into the soil, from which a new plant develops.
  • Layering involves bending of the plant in the air such that the tip of the plant touches the soil, and thus the adventitious roots develop after which the daughter plant grows.
  • In Grafting, a plant part is cut which is called scion and is attached to the stem already embedded in the soil.
  • Tissue culture involves the process of separating a plant tissue from the parent plant and placing it into a sterile medium until a primary structure called callus develops.
  • This callus is then placed into nutrient and hormone containing medium, after which development of plantlets takes place.
  • Then these plantlets are sown which are then transformed into daughter plant.
