Resistor - resistor is just like a hurdle in path. It will resists the current flow which creates potential difference.Assume that two points A and B are the starting and ending points of the hurdle (resistor), let say 5 electrons are on its way and meeting the point A and only three electrons came out easily the other two came out after the other 5 set of electrons reach. Here the potential difference can be calculated by 5-3 that is 2 units. To say more technically it is used to resist the current flow and to get some voltage drops.
Capacitor and inductor these two components are memory components. the capacitor will hold when non changing values are on its way, the inductor is just opposite it will not allow the non changing values. Means the inductor turns the alternating current into magnetic flux and the capacitor will hold the charge for direct current.
Diode is a semi-conductor device. Means we will take some material which is not good at conducting current and add some impurities to it and use it for conducting(semi-conducting). Now this has two type P and N, one is for holes and other is for electrons when these two type of materials merged we get layer called depletion layer in between them. The width of this layer will be varied according to the connection we make (forward bias and reverse bias).
The above components will be working on the current flow through it but transistor will conduct when some input is given to it so it is an active component.
A collections of all these components will be useful to make some electric circuits like filter, amplifier, oscillator etc.
