Arachne was a very talented weaver who could weave the most beautiful cloth anyone had ever seen. She was always praised for her beautiful work and earned a high reputation owing to her great skill in weaving. She always had the fear of losing her skill and talent to weave because it was the most important thing in her life.
However, this particular skill became the cause of her fear and failures when she became proud and boastful. She became haughty, ungrateful and complacent and challenged the Goddess of wisdom and crafts, Athena to a weaving contest. Arachne made great efforts to win the contest but eventually lost as Athena's work was much better than hers.
