Perception. Had our earth been a stationary body without any rotation of its own, we would be seeing a perfect sphere (yes, if our earth were reduced to the size of a bowling ball, it would be smoother than any of them in existence).

However, since our earth is rotating at a phenomenal rate, the equator bulges outwards due to the centripetal force. Therefore, the poles will look more flat in comparison to the equator. For example, when the earth is rotating, there are internal forces trying to pull everything to the inside. Since the forces are constantly acting towards the center of the earth from all directions, with least resistance from poles and the maximum resistance from the equator, the net inward tension is more for the poles and less for the equator. Due to this, our earth appears to be “flat” at the poles.
