The sign of wealth in 19th century England was an umbrella.

At that time, it was a new invention brought in from France and those who carried umbrellas, were considered rich and well-off. The English were at first, shy of using the unwieldy, new invention, which was quite inconvenient, especially when there was wind. But gradually, carrying an umbrella came to be associated with the rich and became a status symbol.
