they did a lot of work to earn money for the treatment of the ailing sister which was already suffering from tuberculosis....

They paid for her treatment at the end of every week.They considered no work to be menial and worked all day without caring about their sleep.They perfectly did all odd jobs and were always present at the beck and call of the narrator.Nicola and Jacopo did everything to bring back normalcy in the life of their tuberculosis afflicted sister.
I believe this was all because of their "never say die" spirit which was given to them by their parents.
