what did the gift of the RATTRAP signify?
Answers
Set amidst the mines of Sweden, Rattrap is the story written by Selma Lagerlof. Selling around small rattraps, a rattrap peddler was a poor fellow who begged for the materials from big farm and stores. He led a lonely life and resorted to begging sometimes. He had no home and shelter and that world has never been kind to him. He thought of the world as a rattrap wherein when anyone touched the rattrap it trapped their hand and amuses himself by thinking of such people.
As peddler meets Edla after stealing crofter's money, we begin to see a transformation in peddler. Edla provides with every kind of attention and regard to the peddler which he longed for. He thanks Edla by not letting him trap in the world rattrap, hadn't he been treated with warmth and love he would have been the same person before. However, when he leaves Edla's house he leaves behind a rat trap in which he leaves a letter for Edla and thirty kronor which he stole from crofter. It was because of Edla he got a sense of recognition and gifted her a rattrap which signifies that it was Edla who saved him from the world's rattrap.
