Indira Gandhi had a long stint at the helm as the Prime Minister during one of the most critical phases in independent India’s history, and necessarily took many crucial decisions and introduced a slew of policies and programs, which have had some lasting impact on the country. Naturally, the impact of her policies were not wholly positive or entirely negative, but mostly mixed bags of some positive and some negative outcomes. Most of the answers here have already spoken about and analysed two of her most well known decisions namely the Nationalization of Major Indian Banks and the imposition of Internal Emergency. So, I would skip these and focus on some of her other decisions which still have an impact on present day India.
Green Revolution and White Revolution : Though to be fair the seeds for the Indian Green Revolution was sown by Chidambaram Subramaniam when he was the Minister for Food and Agriculture in the cabinet of Indira’s predecessor, the program blossomed and bore fruits only during the Indira Gandhi’s reign due to her whole hearted encouragement and supportive measures. The same goes for Operation Flood also known as the White Revolution.
Impact: During the initial decades after Independence food security for the Indian people was abysmally poor, and many parts of India were routinely facing famine like situation. The Nation had to depend on external aid ,and our Rulers often had to go with begging bowls to USA and other Western countries for our basic food requirements. The success of Green Revolution saved the entire Indian population from both such starvation and humiliation, and ushered in the era of food self sufficiency and even surplus.
Operation Smiling Buddha : The bold initiative taken by Indira Gandhi to go nuclear despite strong opposition from the international community,....
ajiv Gandhi, who was from one of the famous a political families in India, never wanted to join politics. However, he had to give-in to politics, following the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi, by her own bodyguards. India needed him at that point in time, and he sworn-in as the 7th Prime Minister of India, the same day his mother was murdered.
He too was assassinated while campaigning for the 1991 Lok Sabha elections on May 21 in 1991.
He stayed out of politics until the death of his younger brother Sanjay Gandhi but after he died in a plane crash, Indira Gandhi urged him to join the Indian politics and be her adviser
