Born on 21 March 1916 , Bismillah belongs to a well known family of musicians from Bihar. His grandfather, Rasool Buax Khan, was the shehnai Nawaz of the Bhojpur king's court . His father, Paigambar Bux , and other paternal ancestors were also great shehnai players.

Bismillah Khan who was given the title of Ustad was born in 21st March 1916 and lived a life of an indian musician until his death on 21st August 2006.

He was known as Qamaruddin Khan originallly.

He was born into a family of traditional Muslims who were too musicians, he was born in Bhirung Raut Ki Gali in Dumraon, which is currently known as Bihar.

His father was Paigambar Baksh and Mitthan, who was a court musician employed in the court of Maharaja Keshav Prasad Singh of Dumraon Estate in Bihar.

His grandfather was Rasool Baksh Khan who was also a musician in the Dumraon palace.

On his birth his grandfather played a special shehnai, to which it was exclaimed "Bismillah", or "In the name of Allah", and thereafter he came to be known by this name.
