In India Iron age came after the end of the Harappan culture (Chalcolithic age).In India an iron age was started in the vedic period around 1500 - 200 BC. Some of the earliest iron age sites in South India are in Hallur & Maski in Karnataka, Adichanallur in Tamilnadu around 1000 BC. Megalithic burials are also related to the iron age.

Some kingdoms that developed in the Iron Age are Mahajanapadas (700-300 BC), Magadha Empire(684 - 424 BC), Nanda Empire(424 - 321 BC)  & Maurya Empire(321 - 272 BC).

The Aryans spread towards the East from about 800 BC - 550 BC. During this time period two religion Hinduism and Buddhism spread widely.

In the Gangetic Plains of North India various powerful kingdoms came up like Kasi, Malla, Panchaala, Gandhara, Kamboj,Magadga , Kuru,etc.In this Period religious, social, political, philosophical  growth expanded. The Upanishads & other religious text also discovered during this period.
 The two main cultures that are considered to this age are Painted Grey Ware and Northern Black polished Ware. In this age man had started to use iron to make weapons and tools like hoes & sickles.
