INTRODUCTION : Doctrine of Lapse is an annexation policy through which many Indian princely states were annexed by British East India Company. This policy was propounded by Lord Dalhousie the then governor General of India. This policy was propounded in the year 1848.
Many Indian kingdoms were annexed through this Doctrine of Lapse. Kingdoms like Jhansi, Satara, Nagpur etc annexed through this policy. Many believe that Oudh was also annexed through this policy but the main reason mentioned was misgovernence. According to this method the kingdom which has no natural heir should be annexed by the British. But according to Brahmins the rulers can adopt a heir. But the Doctrine of Lapse doesn't accept this. Hence, the kingdoms after the death of kings were annexed through this policy if there is no natural heir.
