Kwashiorkor is a type of malnutrition that is caused
due to deficiency of proteins in the diet. The term first originated in
1930-35. This problem is typically found among young children residing in the
tropical areas. A few symptoms associated with kwashiorkor include anemia,
pigmentation changes, retarded growth and potbelly. Kwashiorkor is common among
young children and infants who have just been weaned. This deficiency is
associated with the deficiency of dietary protein. Kwashiorkor is also termed
as protein malnutrition or protein calorie malnutrition.
