Heya..A hygroscopic substance is one that readily attracts water from its surroundings, through either absorption or adsorption..The common salt contains impurities such as Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) which have the property to absorb water from the atmosphere...!!..

The phenomenon by which common salt absorb moisture form the atmosphere due to presence of components like Mgcl2 is called hygroscopy. Hygroscopic nature means it tends to draw water or absorb water when exposed to air.

Not all salts are hygrosopic in nature. pure sodium chloride does not attract water form just moist air.

If the relatively humidity is low, the mineral halite will not be changed in decades. calcium chloride, however is do hygroscopic that at will not only pick up water from moist air, it will remove water vapour from almost dry air to the points of forming a solution.

The chemical nature of hydroscopy is not well understood as to predicting which salts will absorb or absorb water form the atmosphere and which will not. emperical results are usually the method for determining how much water and given salt will attract.
