People's views are going to vary greatly, but there are certain stereotypes and assumptions made about India, at least in the Western world. India is generally seen as a great country with major problems.

Keep in mind that many of these are common perceptions, and not necessarily true in real life. Since the question asks about "what people think," I have included items that are debatable, but widely believed outside India.
