John O'Sullivan coined the expression "Manifest Destiny" which was based on the assumption that America had been chosen by god to civilize the world. It was then used by Lincoln and Wilson. The expression became a concept during the conquest of the West and then in the course of the twentieth century and the interventionist foreign policy abroad.
