Q1. What is valency?
ANSWER➡️ The valency of an element is defined as the ability of an atom to loose or gain electrons to attain a noble gas configuration and complete its octet.
Q2.What are valence electrons?
ANSWER➡️ The electrons which are present in the outermost shell of an atom are known as valence electrons.
✍Let us take an example.
Consider Chlorine. It has an atomic number of 17. So if we write its electronic configuration then it comes out to be:-
2, 8, 7
So we can say that it has 7 electrons in its outermost valence shell and has 7 valence electrons. It has a valency of 1 because it has to gain 1 electron to complete its octet.
