its depend on its density whether an object will float or sink like a coin has more matter in a small area so its density is more and therefore it will sink but a plastic ball covers more area but have less matter in that area therefore it will float as it have less density.
An object whose density will be more than the density of water will sink and whose density will be less than the density of water will float on the surface of water.

water exerts a upward force on the object which is placed on it. this force is known as buoyant force.similarly the object places exerts a downward force (weight)on the surface of the water.
if the buoyant force of the water is greater than the weight of the body then the body will float.(W> Fb)
if the buoyant force of the water is lesser than the weight of the body then the body will sink.(W<Fb)
