What does diversity add in our lives (merits and demerits)

Diversity makes people of different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, religions, and classes interact and learn from each other. It makes us respect other humans, not just people of our own “type”. Empathy towards other humans increases. I have found cultural mixing very enriching.
Diversity has certainly increased the variety of foods people eat in North America. If you looked in a kitchen cupboard in 1960s, it would have just had salt and pepper. Even a cashier would look at ginger and wonder what I was buying. Now there are a range of spices in every cupboard.
Biologically, marrying within our clan can bring out certain inherited diseases in the offspring. For healthy offspring, marry outside your clan.
Having said all that, it is not easy for everyone to mix with unknown people. One has to make an effort, but that effort pays off after you realize how much one has been enriched by the experience.
