The peripheral nervous system consist of nerves arising from the brain and the spinal cord. There are 12 pairs of nerves that arise from the brain and 31 pairs arise from the spinal cord. The nerves that arise from the brain and spread throughout the head are called cranial nerves and that arise from the spinal cord spread throughout the body except the head are call spinal nerves. These nerves may be sensory, motor or mixed. These nerves Carry impulses to and from various organs. These nerves control and coordinate the voluntary and involuntary functions.
