Hey Mate
In the poem 'The frog and the Nightingale' written by Vikram Seth, the poet describes about a frog who thought he was the best singer of the Bingle Bog.
Even though no one liked his song, he did not stop singing.
But one day a nightingale came and started to sing melodiously. Every one cheered for her and encouraged her to sing more. The frog became very jealous and decided to remove her from his way.
He started introducing himself as a great musician and the foolish nightingale immediately fell for the trap. He made her sing for hours and finally she lost her interest in singing. This made the frog angry as his tickets he was selling for the song reduced rapidly. Scared of him, the nightingale took all her might and sang. But she burst a vein and died.
Through this the poet wants to convey that there are many people with different talents. Many may get jealous and often try to bring us down. But we should not fall for it. Before saying anything we have to think twice. They may cheat us so we have to be aware of what is happening around. Also we should believe in ourselves! We should not let anyone take advantage of our talents and we should not let the them rule over us. So what the poet says is that we should not be foolish enough to fall into a trap from which recovery can be very difficult.
