The velocity is given by the slope of displacement-time graph. The displacement-time sketch can never be a straight line or it can never be parallel to the displacement axis because if it happens, it would mean that the distance covered by the body in a specified direction is continuously increasing without taking any time. In other words, we can say that the velocity of body is infinite which is not possible.
