The narrator made promise to saheb. But the promise was not meant to be kept.
Then, the author realises her mistake and feels that saheb's life is aldready filled with such promises. But, the promises were never fulfilled. His world remains as gloomy as ever because promises are made and forgotten.

The author means by "But promises like mine abound in every corner of his bleak world" is that Saheb was promised by the storyteller, that the pledge was never meant to be kept.

  • Saheb was asked about going to school by the author, and he explained that his neighborhood lacked a school, he vowed to go.
  • They approached and inquired about the school readliness, the author was humiliated.
  • The author wanted to say that the promise would be broken like everyone does in this world blatantly.
