well first let me explain the role of KOH pallets and KOH solution .
When we are experimenting the process of evolution of CO2 gas during respiration we use KOH so that is absorbs CO2 gas and decreases pressure in the flask and thus the water in the beaker filled with water on the other end of the flask will rise . Due to pressure difference . And since KOH absorbs CO2 gas we can conclude that CO2 gas is given out during respiration'.
(by seeing the rise in the water level in the flask )
Strong bases like NaOH (sodium hydro-oxide ),soda lime
Even Amines are used in industries for the same purpose
and even limestone absorbs CO2 gas
thus all these materials can be used in the experiment 'CO2 is given out during respiration'
