Concept:

A square is a regular quadrilateral in Euclidean geometry, which means that it has four equal sides and four equal angles. It may alternatively be explained as a rectangle with two neighboring sides that are of equal length. The two finite diagonals of a square are equal and have four axes of symmetry, much like those of any rectangle. A square is divided into two right triangles by a diagonal.

Given:

Here a square is given with some shaded region.

Find:

We have to find what fraction of the square is shaded.

Solution:

According to the question,

If we consider the upper triangle then the two triangles are similar then the upper triangle are scaled by 50‰.

The square is side is equals to 3h.

So, the lower triangle area [(3h)(2h)]/2=3h^2

Now the area of the square is (3h)^2=9h^2.

So, the triangle area is fraction of the area =\frac{3h^2}{9h^2} =\frac{1}{3}.

Hence, the fraction is \frac{1}{3}.
